"It's been churning in the Atlantic Ocean for days... but on Sunday hurricane Igor pummeled the island of Bermuda.

Although huge in size (about a thousand miles long from north to south) Igor hit Bermuda in a weakened state of only a category one with winds between 75 and 80 miles per hour. Bermuda may see over six inches of rain before the tropical system pulls away from the island completely. Some reports stated that between eight and twelve feet of beach and sand on the southern end of the island had already been pulled out to sea from beach erosion and battering waves" (fox17online)

- Regeneration projects ongoing to restore the building into its original state which will make a popular tourist spot.

Gaining access to this site was amazing as it enabled a genuinely eerie sense of 'history'. A photojournalistic conceptual project seemed to jump out as I cautiously wondered through the small rooms.

A combination of old and modern stories seem to mix through these structures in an incomprehensible amalgamation that seemed to unravel only within the small intimate details.

Trying to get into the frame of mind of someone in these cells is nearly impossible when spending a mere 5 minutes in the individual cells. However, I found a few objects that can mean so much more to someone 'inside' . For example the 'lock and key' is not just a mechanical fastening device... it is the symbol defining being 'locked up', 'lack of freedom' and 'held against one's own will'. This may seem obvious but to someone staring at the same object for hours it can then take on new meanings relating to this idea.

The ceiling fan may also be a simple object but how many hours did the inmates lay in their beds staring up at these spinning blades? Dizzy with guilt? Or more literal ... missing their family home with air-conditioning. The small details within historical walls can be very interesting as they can induce fascinating narratives into the creative mind

The latest adventure took me the furthest west I've ever been... Las Vegas, Nevada.

America's largest reservoir is drying up. The combination of climate change and the increasing demand for water has resulted in a 100 foot drop since 2000, which represents a 53% loss in capacity.

Ely successfully gave birth to her first calf, which brings Dolphin Quest Bermuda newborn total to three in as many weeks!

Once the sex of the calves are determined there will be a competition open to name the newborns. In the mean time I am calling Ely's calf 'Chingas' (Bermudian for 'wow') due to the circumstances that surrounded my attendance at the birth which I managed with 4 minutes to spare!

The low light levels and Ely's sporadic swimming pushed my camera to its limits. With the aperture at f-2.8, Shutter speed at 1/125sec and the ISO to the extreme of 6400 I managed to capture the 'flukes out' stage of the birth with no tripod.

As you can see below the calf came out tail first. These images are just two minutes before the calf was fully out and nudged to the surface by its Mum for its first breath.

Dolphin Quest - Part IV (Newborns)

Two baby dolphins born on the same day! Bailey and Caliban gave birth to their calves on April Fools..... no joke.

Caliban delivered first at 12.30am and Bailey followed at 6pm.

Calves are usually born tail or fluke first. However, these newborns were both rostrum first which is quite rare. I was lucky enough to see the second birth which included Bailey nudging her newborn to the surface of the water for it's first ever breath! Unbelievable.

The relationship between the dolphins and trainers is amazing to watch on a daily basis but even more so under these circumstances. During Bailey's delivery she would glide alongside the dock to 'show off' her belly and then drift closer to be rubbed down. A remarkable degree of trust to witness first hand.

Where is David Attenborough anyway? Bermuda bound I hope!

Summertime is coming! I can feel it in the air... cruise ships, beach football/volleyball, rum fun in de sun, cruising paradise lakes, jumpin' off the south shore rocks and three dolphin calfs! All Definitely - In the post!

Unwritten rule that Bermudian's DO NOT get in the water until May 24th ... CRAZY TALK ON D ROCK!

Dolphin Quest - Part II

The Bermuda location has nine Atlantic Bottle-nose dolphins (three pregnant!)

Their average lifespan is 24 years but have been known live into their late 40's. Cirrus is the oldest in Bermuda, she is 36!

Mad fact of the week: Dolphins get a new layer of skin every two hours!!!!

My first week in a full time job is complete so this means many of you owe me money or have to shave your head through lost bets! ha ha... Maybe a double or quits that I will pass my driving test before I'm 35???!!!

The student lifestyle seems a million miles away when I wake up at 6.45 AM! However, watching the sun rise across the sound while sitting on the fast ferry (coffee in hand) and being greeted into work by perma-smiling dolphins is hard to beat.

What a night. It's monday afternoon and my heads still a wee bit fuzzy. I need another two days off to get over that weekend.

A room full of penguins with more stories than a block of Glasgow's high-rises! Mixed with a fantastic talk from our special guest Kenny Sansom, I mean Alan Kennedy (sorry Alan ha ha). (The Dalglish penalty story will stay with me forever!.... and unfortunately Duncan's 'singing' and Trevor's golf swing will as well!)

Fort Albert Part 1 - Light Up The Darkness

While location scouting for upcoming conceptual projects I found myself in St. George's. Again!

You can probably see the trend of this blog swaying between commercial imagery and my new found interest in Bermuda's history and what remains of these once very important forts and buildings.

'Light Up The Darkness' is my mini-title for the day at Fort Albert which portrays my intrigue for the degrading simplicity of the rooms, doors and pathways.

Brief history: Fort Albert (http://www.bermuda-online.org/forts.htm)

Named after Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, it is is a pentagonal moated redoubt completed in early 1842. It is one of several carved from solid limestone rock at huge British Army expense into Retreat Hill. It commanded the channel along the eastern coast of St. George's Island.

In 1877, a huge fire occured. With much gunpowder stored there, all St. George's was threatened. Heroic efforts by men of the Royal Artillery and 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers stemmed the fire.

My portrait portfolio took on a new look last weekend by adding celebrity status!

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing the Hon. F. John Barritt. An MP in Bermuda between 1968-89 and the Speaker of the House of Assembly between 1979 and 1989.

The photograph was taken at Riddells Bay Golf and Country Club where he was celebrating his 94th birthday with friends.

Similar to my visit of Cooper's Island, having good contacts on this island has led me to another fantastic opportunity to photograph Bermuda's historical buildings in true documentary fashion.

"Williams Fort was where Bermudians in 1775 with great treachery stole hundreds of barrels of gunpowder from the British in their support of the American Revolution. (Today, elsewhere in Bermuda, American visitors can see the original letter from George Washington asking Bermudians to steal the gunpowder).

British soldiers were brought in to stop Bermudian "treachery." The United States and France plotted to capture Bermuda but never followed through. The gunpowder was used by the Americans at the Battle of Bunker Hill". - http://www.bermuda-online.org/forts.htm

The fort was turned into a restaurant in the 1960's, Gun Powder Tavern.

Segments of the fort and hints of the restaurant social aspect are an interesting combination when crossed with the limestone stalagmites/stalactites which provides an eerie sense of life to the deserted rooms.

A mix of daylight, long exposures - light painting with torches and off-camera flash creates some very unusual imagery within these historical walls.

My mini-commissions for last week included a 'business' image with Bermuda shorts as the main focus and photographs of 'beautiful spots for couples' to accompany an upcoming article 'Romantic Bermuda'.

Organisation of models proved testing and with the unpredictable weather in recent times I found myself shouting at the clouds more than usual but all smiles in the end. Happy days!

On Thursday evening the two clubs met for the first time this year with the Racquets association taking the bragging rights. An enthralling finale match between the two captains was the highlight of the night with Patrick Foster the eventual winner against Colin Whitney, 3-2.

This weeks photographic adventures included traveling to Tucker's Point Hotel to take images of the MP Dale Butler making his island famous fish cakes. The resort included a golf course, private beach, swimming pool and water sport facilities.

A fish cake dance by a politician made my day and more than compensated for partly overcast skies!

There was 54 years of US Military presence in Bermuda. Before leaving in 1995, they had occupied more than 10 percent of the 21 square mile area.

The bases were built from scratch in 1941-2 and financed solely by taxpayers in the States. Bermuda held a very strategic position in WW II.

The remaining ruins are an interesting contrast to the backdrop of turquoise waters and stretches of pink, sandy beaches. The interiors hold intriguing textures, atmospheres and an eerie sense of history.

Cooper's Island

This 77 acre island is part of a chain that makes up Bermuda. Located in St. George's parish... it is now joined to St. David's island thanks to reclamation work.

United States Government agencies relinquished the island in 1995. Before this date the island was occupied by and property of US Army, US Air Force and US Navy which also included a NASA space tracking system.

The entire world population of Endangered Bermuda Petrel or Cahow birds nests within 1km of Cooper's Island.

Work has began for the island to be converted into a nature reserve. Here are a few shots from the area

My conceptual degree show work 'Modern Mythology II' was chosen for the Helios VII show at The Biscuit Factory gallery in Newcastle, UK.

The exhibition had a great turn out at the opening night on the 15th October and the work was shown for five weeks.

New Equipment

In November, I purchased some new equipment to open up my lighting possibilities within the fashion photography world. My new toy is the safari 600 ringflash.
